Hello World... :)

I built Will My Pension Last? for myself as all of the tools that I came across where trying to sell me something or harvest my data. This is for those of us who just want to find out what our hard saved money will do when we get old.

When I went looking for a UK pension calculator, the first one wanted my email address (then sent me eleven emails). The second wanted my phone number for a "free consultation". The third gave me a single number, as if markets rise by the same amount every year. The fourth wanted me to log in. To a calculator.

So I built the one I wanted:

  • No sign-up, no email, no phone number. Nothing you type leaves your browser, because there's no server to send it to.

  • Nothing to sell. No providers, no affiliate links, no adviser call-backs. It's paid for by a few clearly labelled Google ads, never inside your results. I am not going to get rich from this but it serves my needs as well!

  • Honest about uncertainty. It runs 1,000 possible futures for markets and inflation, using the FRC's AS TM1 growth assumptions behind UK pension statements, and shows a typical outcome, a tougher one, and how often the money lasts.

  • Real UK rules: income tax including Scotland's bands, tax-free cash, the State Pension and when it starts, and couples, including what happens after one partner dies.

  • Plain English. No "decumulation strategy optimisation".

It's UK-only, and it's general information, not advice: it shows scenarios and trade-offs and leaves the decisions to you.

I'd love to hear where it's confusing, where the numbers look wrong, and what you'd want it to handle next. The full methodology is at willmypensionlast.com/methodology.

Launch day update: the bots love me

I checked the traffic logs to see who’d turned up for my big day. Mostly burglars.

In 24 hours, bots made at least 17 attempts to find a WordPress login, 18 to find files holding passwords and keys, and 37 to get at source code and credentials. It’s flattering, but they’ve broken into a shed and found no lawnmower.

There are no accounts and no database, and the projections run in your own browser, so the figures you enter never reach us. If a bot wants to know your pension pot, it’ll have to ask you, like a nosy relative at Christmas.

In the spirit of honesty, here’s what I can see: Cloudflare’s stats and security logs, meaning page views, browsers, countries, and the IP addresses and pages requested. Those stats use no cookies, and none of it includes what you type. Google’s consent tool also gets basic visit details. The privacy policy has the lot, and I’ve made it nearly as thrilling as this comment.

You may also spot some empty boxes labelled “Advertisement”. That’s my entire business model (as I have said before I have spent £5 on a domain name that I am trying to recoop), currently waiting for Google to approve it. Google says this can take up to four weeks, which on a retirement calculator counts as a rounding error. Until then, the ads are performing exactly like my first pension: there’s a space for something to appear, and I’m told to be patient.

So I may be the only person ever to launch an ad-funded site where the bots turn up and the ads don’t.

If you’re a human, please try it and tell me what it gets wrong. You’d be helping me improve the numbers, and also my ratio of humans to burglars.
