Another big launch from OpenAI — that's competitive with Microsoft AND Google... AND Perplexity! The difference here is the emphasis on citations directed from several of those $100M publisher deals OpenAI recently struck. While Perplexity has been accused of being a content thief, OpenAI is paying handsomely to avoid that fate and getting publishers on its side: “AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it's crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process, and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.” —Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic “Sam and the truly talented team at OpenAI innately understand that for AI-powered search to be effective, it must be founded on the highest-quality, most reliable information furnished by trusted sources. For the heavens to be in equilibrium, the relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic and provenance must be protected.” — Robert Thomson, Chief Executive, News Corp What's wild is how publishers see this as an opportunity get ahead of the New York Times, which chose to sue rather than partner with OpenAI. 🍿🍿🍿

Comment highlights

Just by looking at it, the interface screams modern and user-friendly. OpenAI has done an outstanding job ensuring that everything feels intuitive.

the day search GPT gets launched Google shares tanked 2% , $GOOGL lost $42B in market cap in the 25 minutes after #searchgpt was announced.

As someone who's tired of being shilled results that aren't exactly to what you're looking for from SEO experts, this looks like a good alternative. I would like to know one thing though, you mentioned how perplexity is being accused of being a content thief, how would you ensure that the results generated will be accurate and cited by trusted sources? who are these trusted sources and what does it take to make a source trusted? this might be a newbie question 😅

Best for Contextual Results: It provides context-aware search results, considering the user’s intent and context to deliver more accurate answers. A life saver as it comprehends natural language queries, making it easier for users to find relevant information without using specific keywords.

it would finally solve my daily problem of jumping back & forth between different platforms

Excited to see how this works and how effective it is at sourcing the right context for prompts.

The visual elements in search results should make complex information much clearer. Could you share more about how these visuals will be incorporated and updated in real time?

This sounds like a fantastic improvement in search technology. How does the system ensure the sources provided are always relevant and reliable?

Nice work with this feature! The combination of intuitive search and visual aids is a refreshing approach.

As a tech enthusiast and avid searcher, I'm genuinely excited about SearchGPT. It's like having a knowledgeable friend who understands my queries better than ever before. Here's why: Google's algorithm has seen better days. SearchGPT's quality results and personalized touch make it a worthy contender. Plus, it'll soon integrate with ChatGPT—double win! So, Google, watch out! SearchGPT might just become my go-to. I can't wait to see how SearchGPT evolves. It's like witnessing the birth of a digital sidekick—one that'll make my everyday searches smarter and more enjoyable!

About time! I was using perplexity constantly. Honestly, props goes to Perplexity for trying. They were taking a page out of big tech's approach which is asking for forgiveness later. Not always a great way to make friends, but it does advance their tech/offerings. I hope they compensate content creators soon. But yeah, about damn time that the money I pay to OpenAi does something useful in search. I don't think I'll leave Google though, I find myself constantly going back.
