I built Real Hourly Rate after a painful realization: I'd been freelancing for years at $85/hr, but when I actually accounted for taxes, health insurance, SaaS subscriptions, and the ~12 hours/month I spend on proposals and invoicing that nobody pays for — my real hourly rate was $41.
That gap felt worth fixing. So I built a calculator that shows you three numbers:
Apparent rate — what you think you charge
Billable rate — profit ÷ billed hours only
Real rate — profit ÷ every hour you actually worked
It also has a Rate Planner: type in your target real rate, it tells you exactly what to charge clients to get there.
