The thing that kept bugging us: Making Tax Digital keeps pushing people off the tool they actually want to use - a spreadsheet. HMRC already mandates digital filing for VAT, and it's now rolling out to Income Tax too, with Self Assessment folded into the same digital regime.
But loads of sole traders, businesses, and accountants still run their books in Excel and really don't want to rip that up just to satisfy a compliance rule.
So rather than build yet another full accounting platform and ask everyone to migrate, we built a bridge. You keep your spreadsheet, AbraTax handles the HMRC-recognised submission for VAT, Self Assessment, and MTD for Income Tax. That's the whole idea.
What changed most as we built it was the agent side. Filing from a spreadsheet sounds genuinely useful for sole traders who hate switching tabs. One thing that would make it even better is a built-in error checker that flags common mistakes like mismatched totals or missing expense categories before you hit submit, since catching those in Excel is such a pain right now.
Filed my last VAT return straight from my usual spreadsheet without exporting anything, which honestly surprised me. Such a relief for someone who ditches full accounting tools.
