I kept bouncing between typing fatigue and not wanting my voice shipped to random servers just to dictate a paragraph. The tools that felt fast usually weren’t private; the tools that felt private often weren’t seamless. I wanted something that felt like a keyboard shortcut for speech—speak, and text appears where I’m already working.
Time and trust. Typing long updates, docs, notes, and messages is slow. Cloud dictation adds friction for anyone who cares about where their audio goes. AirTypes is built so speech-to-text runs on your machine after setup: hold a hotkey, speak, release, and cleaned text is typed at your cursor—less typing, fewer context switches, no cloud speech pipeline for core offline use.
Early on we obsessed over reliability (recording, transcription, injecting text into real apps). That forced hard choices around privacy-by-architecture: keep processing on-device, make setup straightforward, and add polish options only where they stay offline unless you explicitly choose otherwise. For launch we focused on a simple promise: save time typing, keep your voice yours, ship clear macOS & Linux installs with honest docs.
