Every YouTube downloader seemed to have a catch: fake download buttons, missing audio, codec issues, or breaking after a platform update. So I built YT-Forge. YT-Forge is an open-source desktop YouTube downloader built on top of yt-dlp. It supports downloads up to 8K, optional H.264 conversion for editor-friendly files, automatic yt-dlp updates, and runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. No ads, no tracking, no external servers, just a reliable downloader that stays up to date.

Top comment

Hey everyone! 👋 I'm Suja, a student developer and the creator of YT-Forge. The project started after I noticed how many YouTube downloaders either produced files with missing audio, had compatibility issues with editing software, or stopped working after platform changes. I ended up learning far more about codecs, containers, audio streams, and video formats than I ever expected, and along the way built a tool that solved those problems for me. YT-Forge is built on top of yt-dlp, but focuses on the experience around it: editor-friendly downloads, automatic updates, cross-platform support, and a simple interface that doesn't require learning command-line flags. What started as a personal tool gradually turned into a project I felt was worth polishing and open-sourcing. I'd love to hear your thoughts, feature requests, bug reports, or suggestions for improvement. Thanks for checking it out ❤️
