I make map atlases, and this is the rail one. It draws 1,247 train routes across 120 countries on a single world map. Click any line and you get its distance, its fastest scheduled journey time, the speed it actually averages over that journey rather than the headline top speed, the operator, the year the line opened, a photograph and a short piece on why the line is worth knowing about.
Three things up front, because they are what I get asked every time.
It is curated, not complete. 1,247 routes is not every railway on Earth and was never meant to be: Germany alone has thousands of lines. What is here is the notable passenger services, and the map says so on its own front page.
It is static, not live. The lines are checked data built into the site, not a feed. There are no departure times, no live tracking and no tickets. Journey times are published values, not a timetable.
It is free. No signup, no ads, and the underlying data is open under CC BY 4.0 with a DOI, so you can check any number or reuse the lot.
The parts I enjoyed most are the data stories. The fastest train in every country ranks 104 countries by the speed their quickest train actually averages end to end. China's Jinghu averages 307 km/h, which is 88 per cent of its top speed. The Shanghai Maglev touches 431 but averages 225, because it is a 30 km airport run. The US Acela averages 110 and finishes behind 33 other countries.
Corrections genuinely welcome. A good number of the routes on the map are there because somebody told me they were missing.
