Hi Product Hunt 👋
I built WIRE because every news app I used was designed so I could
never finish. You scroll, it loads more, and you close it without any
sense of having read the news just of having been in the app a while.
So the whole product is built around a stopping point. Deck mode deals
the day's top stories as a card stack: swipe right to read, left to
skip. Twenty cards, then there are no more cards, and it tells you so
instead of quietly fetching another page.
Two things changed while I was building it.
The first: I almost cut the deck. It felt like a gimmick next to a "real" feed, and I only kept it because I noticed I was using it and ignoring the feed I'd spent much longer on. It's now the thing everyone comments on. I also threw away the library I started with and wrote the swipe by hand after fighting it for two days about 120 lines that did
exactly what I wanted.
The second: Arabic. I assumed localization would handle right-to-left. It handles text. It does not handle a left-aligned masthead, chips that scroll the wrong way, or a progress bar that fills from the wrong side. I ended up auditing every row and every padding value by hand. If you're planning more than one locale, use direction-aware spacing from
day one retrofitting it is miserable.
To be straight about what this is: WIRE is a reader, not a newsroom. Stories come from tech outlets, each one attributed, and tapping through opens the original. What I built is the reading experience.
Free, no account, iOS for now the Android build is done and waiting on submission.
I'd really like feedback on the Arabic layout, which I can't fully review myself.
