About a year ago, my best friend and I got back into Pokémon cards because of the new hype cycle around modern cards. After entering a completely different field of Pokémon from when we were kids, we realized everything wrong with card shows, eBay, scalping, and the limitations of the hobby. Originally, we wanted to create a marketplace with 0% fees, however, we soon realized that buying and selling wasn't the problem. The problem was trading:
1. eBay and card shows take huge chunks of value when you try sell cards
2. The reason people sell their cards is just to buy more cards (an infinite cycle of fees that decrease the value of your collection)
3. If you want to trade (at a card show or a shop), your cards will only be valued at around 70-80%
4. There's no way to trade online
5. There's no safe or pure way to find other collectors for trading (only options are social media or Facebook Marketplace)
So, we made Utopia (naming it after the "perfect destination" for collectors), where collectors can find other collectors in their area that have the cards they want for 0% fees.
