Uptime monitoring turned into a game. Every hour your site stays up, your pixel gladiator earns armor. One minute of downtime costs five hours of it. Checks run every 60 seconds from three AWS regions. Drawn against a rival every Monday, scored every Sunday.

I wanted to build a fun side project, so I went looking for the most boring category I could find. Uptime monitoring won easily. It is a flat line you pay for and hope never moves.

So I made it a game. Your site becomes a pixel gladiator. It earns armor for every hour it stays up and loses it five times faster when it goes down. Ten tiers, each one visible on a public profile. Every Monday you are drawn against a rival, every Sunday the week is scored.

What changed while building it: the honesty rules turned out to be the interesting part. Once I started measuring real companies, every shortcut became a lie I would be publishing. So a minute only counts as down when two of three regions agree. A 403 counts for nobody, because that is a site refusing a robot, not an outage. And the 30 companies I already measure can never win or lose a duel, because they never entered one. They show up as "observed" until someone proves they own the domain.

The measured numbers are more fun than I expected. Hugging Face answers fastest in the whole AI division at 631ms — and it is also one of two AI sites that dropped below 100% this week. Fast and up are different problems. Notion is the slowest thing I measure anywhere at 1758ms. Stripe has not missed a minute and answers in 729ms.

Built solo with Next.js, Convex, and checkers in three AWS regions. Happy to answer anything. Hope you like it.

Who hunted Uptime Gladiator?

Uptime Gladiator was hunted by Dino Sakoman.
