Tunnex
Encrypted Postgres & Mongo backups, from your desktop.
Tunnex is a desktop app for backing up and restoring self-hosted Postgres and MongoDB databases. One click, AES-256-GCM encryption, OS-keychain key storage, full audit log. Free and open source. No cloud. Your backups stay on your machine.
Every developer who runs a database on a VPS does the same four things: SSH in, run pg_dump, copy the file, hope nothing goes wrong.
It works. But: your password is now in shell history. The dump sits in plaintext. The file is called backup-final-2.sql. You have ten of them. Nothing is encrypted. Nobody on your team knows you did it.
One day a teammate restored the wrong dump into production. The file was called mongo.dump. We had six files called mongo.dump. No log. No warning. No undo.
We looked for a tool that would have prevented this. Nothing existed for small teams running their own databases on their own servers. So we built Tunnex.
One click to back up. AES-256-GCM encryption on the fly — no plaintext file ever touches disk. Key lives in your OS keychain. Every action is logged. You can preview a MongoDB backup without restoring it. Restore asks you to confirm the target database name by typing it.
Free, open source (MIT). No cloud. Your backups stay on your machine.
Try it on a database that doesn't matter. Break it. Tell us what's wrong.

Tunnex was hunted by Md Ashif. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
