TrailSift
Clear 'where you've been' records other Mac cleaners miss
Your Mac keeps a record of where you've been: every download and the site it came from, every Wi-Fi network it has joined, everyone you've emailed, where your photos were taken. Clearing your history and private browsing don't touch it. TrailSift checks more than 30 of these places, explains each one, and clears what you choose after showing exactly what will go. Nothing leaves your Mac, the audit script is open source, and Pro is a one-off payment, not a subscription. In five languages.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm John from Itch Studio, a small studio in the UK.
TrailSift started when I looked at what my own Mac had kept. The download log went back to February 2025, 952 downloads with the address of each. Every downloaded file still carried its address in Get Info. My Mac remembered 189 Wi-Fi networks, Mail remembered people I'd long since deleted from Contacts, and folders from apps I'd removed years ago were still there. Clearing browser history touched none of it, and neither did private browsing.
TrailSift checks more than 30 of these places and shows you what's in each, reading only. The audit is free. Pro clears what you choose after a full preview: files go to the Trash and databases are backed up for a week first.
A few things I cared about:
- Nothing leaves your Mac. No account, no analytics.
- The audit script is open source (MIT), so you can see exactly what it reads.
- It's a one-off payment, not a subscription.
New in 1.3: Remove an App with everything it keeps, Photo Locations to share photos without where they were taken, and a Hand Over This Mac checklist for selling or passing on a Mac. And since 1.3.1 it speaks German, French, Spanish and Japanese as well as English.
For launch, the code PRODUCTHUNT takes Pro to £5, $7 or €6 (usually £15), until 19 January.
I'd love to hear what it finds on your Mac, and what you'd like it to check next.

Who hunted TrailSift?
TrailSift was hunted by John Durcan. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
