I’ve spent much of my career building professional 3D design software, but I kept noticing that most CAD tools—even those described as beginner-friendly—still expect users to understand 3D space before they can create anything meaningful. For young children, that first step can be intimidating.
ToyCAD began with a simple question: What if 3D design started with drawing?
I created a split-screen workspace where kids can scribble naturally in 2D and immediately watch their drawing become a smooth 3D object. That instant transformation became the “aha” moment at the heart of ToyCAD.
As children and parents tested it, ToyCAD evolved from a simple drawing experiment into a complete creative tool with colors, draw-on-object features, joints, building tools, smoothing, and multicolor 3D-printing export—all while keeping the first experience approachable.
My goal is not to simplify professional CAD menus for children. It is to rethink 3D design around how kids already create, experiment, and learn.
