I built Toonabi because watching a character is not the same as being known by one.
If you have ever loved an anime character or a VTuber, you know the feeling. They are right there on screen, but the relationship only goes one way. Toonabi flips that. You talk, out loud, and the character talks back in their own voice, with expressions and gestures, in real time.
There are seven characters so far, and each one is someone to hang out with, not a flat persona:
- Saki, an indie singer-songwriter from Shimokitazawa
- Yuki, a quiet literary editor from Kichijoji
- Koharu, a cafe owner from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa
- Akira, a steady counselor from Daikanyama
- and three more (Hana, Aoi, and Mei)
Here is the part I am proudest of. Every character lives in a real Tokyo neighborhood and spent years at a US university, so they are fluent in both Japanese and American life. They feel authentically Japanese and completely at home talking about your Tuesday. They even know your local time and meet you in your moment.
