I had the idea for Toolstash over a decade ago. I've always been a bit of a DIY-er and hobbyist woodworker so found myself needing random tools frequently. Many times I'd rent them from the local home improvement store but really if I'd had a neighbor who had the tool, I could just borrow it from them. And likewise...I'm more than happy to let neighbors and friends borrow tools! But adding your entire tool collection is daunting and a major roadblock for uptake. Then, GPT-4 came along with unprecedented vision capabilities and boom! Adding tools became as simple as snapping a photo. And thus the idea for Toolstash became a real possibility. Today you can easily quickly add your entire tool collection by doing nothing more than taking a quick photo and we'll do the rest (identifying it, categorizing it, pulling in additional details, etc). Give it a try today, for free! https://toolstash.com

What an innovative idea, @shpigford! Toolstash really addresses a common problem faced by DIY-ers and hobbyists. The integration of GPT-4 to simplify the process of adding tools through just a photo is a game-changer. This will definitely enhance the UX and eliminate the daunting task of manual entry. I love the community aspect of this too—being able to share tools with neighbors not only builds connections but also promotes sustainability. It would be awesome to see a feature for tracking the borrowing history to keep everything organized! Looking forward to seeing how this evolves. I’m definitely going to give it a shot and upvote this on PH! Keep up the fantastic work!

I had been hoping to start a tool library in my neighborhood, but I have no idea where it would be located. This is an interesting angle, and might scratch the itch. What happens next in the app after you identify a tool you need that a friend actually has? Thanks for building!

Congrats on the launch! This sounds like a great idea for any sort of personal inventory management ,sharing and learning. Is it guard-railed to only be used for hardware tools or can it be used for any item? Was wondering if this could be used for just tracking random things I lend to and borrow forms others like some music gear, art supplies, etc. and not just hardware tools.

Congratulations on the launch guys! This product seems wonderful : ) Have you considered integrating Toolstash with local tool libraries or apartment maintenance teams? It could add value by helping manage and track tools in community and business settings.

Sweet launch Josh! This would be perfect for apartment maintenance teams. They have hundreds of tools! 🧰 And larger complexes occasionally loan them out to tenants (hammers, fans, etc.) so that would be huge for them. (I used to manage apartments and the tool nightmare is real) 😂

This is neat. Nice color choice too. Remind me of Caterpillar and Stanley the tool brands. Have you considered pitching this to a tool library ? Depends in which place of the world you are...in California they have tool libraries for the community.
