I got tired of paying Claude to click buttons for me. Every browser task meant spinning up an agent, burning tokens, and eating up my memory. So I built one instead. Tomato is a Mac browser on Chromium. Press Option Space, or just say "Hey Tomato", and talk to it. It plans, clicks and types across your tabs, and it stops to ask before it sends anything. The model runs on your Mac, so your pages never leave it. Bring your own Claude or ChatGPT key if you'd rather. It's free. Actually free!

I kept paying API credits to have an agent drive a headless Chrome badly, so I built the browser instead. Tomato is a native macOS app on the Chromium engine through CEF, not Electron. The rendering, networking and security model are Chromium's, patches are kept small, and the product lives in a Swift layer on top. Sites and Chrome extensions work. The assistant is off until you turn it on. When it's on, the model runs on your Mac by default, so pages and questions stay there. You can point it at Claude or ChatGPT with your own key instead, and it tells you what leaves before it does. Voice is the same: Option+Space or a wake word, transcribed on-device. The agent plans, clicks and types across tabs. It stops and shows you exactly what it will do before any login, purchase, message or post. Those four can't be switched off. Most other guardrails are switches you control. Honest limitations: - How often the agent succeeds on real sites is not measured yet. It's the next thing I'm doing, on 60 tasks, and I'll publish the number whatever it is. - Not notarized, so Gatekeeper blocks the first open. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. - macOS 13+, Apple silicon and Intel. It's free and non-commercial. No ads, no paid tier, nothing to upsell later. Built solo, spec-first, with heavy use of Claude Code. Happy to talk about what that actually looked like, including where it went wrong.

Who hunted Tomato?

Tomato was hunted by Vishal Patil. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
