Hey Product Hunt 👋
I built The Box because I kept losing the "wait, what game is that screenshot from?" argument with friends. So I made a daily puzzle out of it.
How it plays:
- ~10 screenshots per daily challenge, difficulty escalates as you go
- A timer runs on each screenshot — answer in under 3s for max points (200), 100 pts if you take 20s+
- Type a few letters of the game name and pick from the autocomplete; multiple tries allowed, no penalty for wrong guesses
- Hints reveal the release year, publisher, developer, or genre — costs 20% of that screenshot's score, or use a free one from your inventory
- Daily + monthly leaderboards (live via Socket.io), streaks with auto-granted streak-freezes, "catch-up" mode for the last 7 days
It's free to play. Optional paid power-up packs; the daily ritual stays free.
Tech: React 19 + Vite + Tailwind v4 on the front. Node 24 + Express 5 + Postgres 16 + Kysely on the back. Better Auth (session cookies, not JWT). BullMQ + Redis for scheduled daily challenges and screenshot imports. Built solo, clean architecture, monorepo.
What I'd love feedback on:
1. The scoring curve rewards sub-3-second answers heavily — too brutal, or about right?
2. Are the hints priced correctly at -20%?
3. What would turn this from a one-off curiosity into a daily habit for you?
