The Bayeux Tapestry has returned to England for the first time since it was made, nearly a thousand years ago. To widen access and help people explore the Tapestry in more detail, the British Museum commissioned Numiko to create an interactive online experience. The result of this project is The Bayeux Tapestry Online Experience, a free interactive experience that you can use to explore the full length of the Tapestry in close detail.
Hey Product Hunt ๐
The Bayeux Tapestry is 70 metres of 11th-century embroidery telling the story of the Norman Conquest. When it went on display at the British Museum, tickets sold out within 24 hours. Most people will never see it up close, so Numiko put the whole thing online.
What you can do:
๐ Zoom down to single stitches. The source image is 482,096 ร 5,550 px, about 2.7 billion pixels, served as WebP deep-zoom tiles.
๐ Open 240+ hotspots in 7 themes: People, Places, Daily Life, Design & Making, Latin, Warfare & Power, Animals & Nature.
๐๏ธ Filter by theme to follow one thread, such as every horse or every Latin inscription.
๐ฐ๏ธ Use the timeline to jump between 58 scenes in 13 sections.
โฟ Accessible: it meets WCAG 2.2 AA, works fully by keyboard, and has scene descriptions for screen readers.
It's free, needs no sign-up, and works on phones.
We'd love to hear which detail surprised you most. (Our pick: the Latin graffiti-style captions.)
Built by Numiko with the British Museum.
This is really cool! i really like the different themes, especially being able to follow things like the animals or Latin text throughout the whole tapestry. makes it way more interesting to explore (also because I'm trying to get more into history). Congrats on the launch! :)
