I'm Jose, an iOS developer since 2012. Here's the real story behind Terraforge.
At university in the early 2000s, my friends and I stumbled on a browser alchemy game — drag Fire into Water, watch something new appear. We were hooked. But looking back, it was mostly trial and error. You combined things at random until something happened.
Twenty years later, I wanted to rebuild that feeling — and fix what always bothered me. In Terraforge, combinations have logic. Cloud + Energy = Storm makes sense. But I also wanted mysticism: Fog + Ocean = Kraken shouldn't be "correct" — it should feel inevitable. That tension between logical and legendary is what I spent the most time designing.
Keeping everything original pushed me in unexpected ways. I couldn't borrow licensed characters, so I had to invent combinations that felt culturally resonant without referencing anything I didn't own. That constraint made the game better — 266 recipes, all original, all deliberate.
I leaned on AI for the things outside my strengths: the ambient soundtrack and element artwork. It let me stay in the design and code layer I love. And honestly — if Terraforge does well, I want to build a card game from this universe next.
Fourteen years shipping iOS apps. This is my first game. I hope it brings back the same feeling my university friends and I had huddled around a laptop in 2004.
What's the most unexpected combination you'd want to see? Drop it below — I'll tell you if it made the cut.
