Every office has the rule: new laptop, promotion, new baby, you owe the team a treat. Team Tax moves it out of the group chat into a ranked queue. Cards get hotter the longer a debt goes unpaid, and you can never clear your own tax. Someone else has to. Team Tax tracks the treats people owe: promotions, birthdays, weddings, new bikes. Cards age visibly until somebody pays up.
At our office there is an unwritten rule. Something good happens to you — a new laptop, a promotion, a house, a bike, a baby, or just good news — and you owe the team a treat.
The rule was never the problem. Remembering was. The debt lived in a group chat and got settled only when somebody was cheeky enough to keep bringing it up.
Team Tax is that tradition, made visible. One shared queue, cards you drag to re-rank, and sixteen occasions from New Laptop 💻 to Lost a Bet 🎲.
The rule that makes it work: you can never clear your own tax. Somebody else marks it settled. You cannot edit or delete a card you are on either — try, and a laughing GIF tells you no. You cannot quietly remove yourself from the card to get around that. We closed that one.
Everything else grew out of actually using it:
Cards get visibly hotter the longer a debt sits unpaid
Nudge somebody overdue — once a day, and never a card you are on
Photos and video of the treat actually happening, so it is on the record
A directory that remembers who is vegetarian, who is halal and who is allergic to peanuts, because somebody has to place the order
Birthdays and work anniversaries surface before they pass, not after
It has been running inside our team for how long? and we have settled how many? treats.
You can start a team in about a minute — it is free, and you will be the owner. I would love to know: does your team have this ritual too, and what is the most ridiculous thing somebody has been taxed for?
