Hey everyone π
I built TabChat because I kept losing track of information
scattered across dozens of open tabs β research, docs, articles β
and wanted a way to just ask "what did that pricing page say again?"
instead of tab-hunting.
It's fully open source. Right now it installs via "load unpacked"
from GitHub (Chrome Web Store submission is next on the roadmap) β
instructions in the README, takes about 2 minutes.
Would genuinely love feedback, especially on:
- the retrieval quality/relevance
- what other data sources you'd want it to pull from
- whether the load-unpacked install is a dealbreaker for you
Happy to answer anything about the architecture too.
One thing that would really take this over the top for me is a browser extension companion that lets me highlight a passage in any tab and instantly save it as a pinned memory so the answer always cites the exact source. Right now even with great vector search I sometimes lose the thread between the question and which of my 30 tabs actually contained the answer.
Auto-expiring tabs in the index would be really useful, so the search ignores pages I closed days ago. Maybe a TTL setting or a "sync only currently open tabs" toggle that refreshes the vector store based on what is actually live in the browser right now.
finally something that actually helps with my ridiculous tab hoarding habit. asked it about a doc i had open somewhere and it pulled the right paragraph in seconds, which honestly shocked me.
Would love a way to scope searches to just one window or a pinned set of tabs, sometimes I want to ask questions across only my research tabs and not mix in the dozen random things open in another window. Could be a simple toggle or a saved tab group.
finally something that actually solves the "I know it's in one of these tabs somewhere" problem. ran a quick query across a messy work session and it pulled the right paragraph from like tab 8, super handy.
Honestly the natural language search across tabs is kind of a lifesaver, I had like 12 docs open and it pulled the exact paragraph I needed in seconds. Wish more browser tools worked this smoothly without sending everything to some random server.
