Sumi
Japanese ink landscapes, quietly alive on your desk
Five sumi-e ink landscapes that move — a waterfall, rain on a pavilion, moonlit bamboo, waves, koi. They shift with the hour, make their own sound (synthesised on-device, no audio files), and fall asleep on a timer. No ads, no tracking, no subscription. $5.99 once, including every painting added later.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
I built Sumi because I wanted a painting on my desk, and a framed print costs forty dollars and never moves.
It's five sumi-e ink landscapes, and they're quietly alive: the waterfall falls, rain crosses the river, bamboo moves when the wind gets to it. Each one shifts between day, dusk and night — following the clock if you let it. The sound is synthesised on the device rather than sampled, so you can leave it running without a 40MB rain loop repeating in your ears. There's a sleep timer that dims the painting and fades the sound out.
Three things I deliberately did not build:
- No account. No analytics. No third-party SDKs. Nothing leaves the device.
- No subscription. $5.99 once, and that includes every painting I add later.
- No streaks, no lessons, no notifications. It asks nothing of you.
On how it's made, since someone always asks and I'd rather say it first: the source imagery is AI-generated from my own prompts in the Muromachi ink-painting style, then selected, animated, loop-corrected and composed by hand. Nothing reproduces an existing historical work. Everything that happens while you're looking at it — the tone shifts, the ink that spreads under your fingertip, the audio — is real code running on your phone, not baked into the video.
The first painting is free, so you can see whether it does anything for you before paying. Happy to answer anything.

Who hunted Sumi?
Sumi was hunted by Shintaro. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
