StringScales
Backing tracks that show you what to play over them
Drop in a chord progression, tag each chord with a scale, and press play. StringScales plays a live band in any key, tempo and style while your fretboard lights up the right notes for every chord. Every scale, every tuning, no account, completely free.
Hi Product Hunt,
I'm Kevin, a guitarist and developer in Belgium. I built StringScales because I spent years knowing the theory and still going blank the moment it was time to actually solo over something. I could name the scale. I could not find it on the neck in real time.
Most tools solve half of it. Backing track apps give you the chords. Scale diagrams give you the shapes. Nothing put them on the same screen, moving together.
So that is what this does. You build a chord progression, tag each chord with the scale you want to play over it, and press play. A live band plays your changes in any key, tempo and style, and the fretboard lights up the right notes for the current chord as it goes. Dorian on the ii, altered on the V, harmonic minor on the turnaround. You see where to play, not just what the chord is called.
It is about a year since the first version. I rebuilt it around what people asked for, and the whole thing is free now: all scales, all keys, every tuning, unlimited progressions, no ads, no premium tier. An account only adds saving. I am one developer and hosting is cheap. If money ever comes it will be from teacher tools and learning content, not from locking the fretboard.
If you want the strange corner: there is a microtonal playground with 19 to 53 tones per octave, the Kite guitar, just intonation, Scala import, and a fretboard designer where you place frets in cents.
What I would like feedback on: does the band actually sound musical enough to practice against, and which scales or tunings are missing. I will reply to everything today.

StringScales was hunted by Kevin. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
