Hey everyone! 👋 I’m Sidhant, the maker behind SmartStudy 📚.
I’ve always approached studying scientifically — trying to find what actually works rather than what just feels productive. And the biggest problem I kept seeing around me was students putting in real effort, genuinely learning something, and then forgetting it within a week.
That’s not a motivation problem. That’s a memory problem.
Ebbinghaus proved in 1885 that we forget in a predictable exponential curve — roughly 70% of new information is gone within 24 hours. But he also proved the flip side: reviewing at the right moment before you forget can flatten that curve dramatically. This became the foundation of spaced repetition.
For decades, the best implementation of this was SM-2 — the algorithm Anki still uses, built in 1987. It works, but it treats every user’s memory the same way.
When I was building SmartStudy, I came across FSRS — the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler published at ACM KDD 2022 by Jarrett Ye. It’s a complete rethink. Instead of fixed intervals, FSRS builds a personal model of your forgetting curve using machine learning, updating after every review. In head-to-head testing on real Anki data, it outperformed SM-2 significantly in predicting when users would actually forget a card.
That’s what’s running under the hood here. Combine that with AI that reads your PDFs and generates cards that test real understanding — not just definitions — and you get a study system that’s both effortless to set up and scientifically optimized.
