A few months ago I wanted a better way to track my weight. I tried a bunch of apps, but none quite worked the way I wanted. Most of them recorded my weight just fine. They just didn't help me answer the questions I actually cared about: - Am I actually making progress? - Is today's number meaningful, or just normal fluctuation? - When will I reach my goal? Eventually I stopped looking and decided to build my own app. It's called Steady Scale. A few things that mattered to me: - Privacy first. No accounts, no servers, no ads. Your data stays on your device. - A simple interface. - Body-neutral language, no motivational hype. Instead of focusing on engagement, I wanted to build something that helped people understand their weight. That meant simple explanations in the app, and built-in resources for anyone who wants to learn more or find support. I probably spent more time on the forecasting model than anything else. I tested it with both real and simulated data, comparing different regression models and window lengths before settling on the one with the least bias that still reacts to real changes. I know it's just a weight tracker, and there are plenty of those. But this one solved a real problem for me, and I hope it's useful for someone else too. I'm a solo developer, and this is my first app. I'm grateful to my wife, whose feedback helped shape it from the beginning. It's available on iPhone today, and I'd like to bring it to Android next. I'd love feedback, especially from people who already track their weight. Is there anything you wish your current app did better?

Comment highlights

The trend line smoothing really helps cut through the daily noise on the scale. Love that nothing leaves my phone, no signup or sync setup to fight with.

The trend forecast is surprisingly reassuring, especially when the day-to-day number feels like a jump. Nice that nothing leaves the phone.

Love that everything stays on my phone, no signups or ads to wade through. The trend forecast actually made my daily weigh-ins feel useful instead of stressful.
