Ship something, then watch it take off. Stargazer Bar shows your GitHub repo's stars and forks trending live in your Mac menu bar — an actual history from background checks as often as every 10 minutes, not a snapshot. Share a milestone screenshot or X post from the menu. Also tracks release downloads, a maintainer radar (CI/PRs/issues), and any public repo — no GitHub account required.

Top comment

Hey PH! I built Stargazer Bar because I kept alt-tabbing to GitHub every few minutes after a launch just to see if the star count had moved. It's a small native macOS app that lives in your menu bar: a live trend chart for every repo you track — not just a current count, an actual history, because it polls in the background as often as every 10 minutes. During a launch you can actually watch the slope, not just refresh a number. Cross a milestone and copy a share image or compose an X post straight from the menu. It's also useful day to day if you maintain a project — release download totals, and a "maintainer radar" for CI failures, new PRs, and unanswered issues. And since tracking works on any public repo with no GitHub account required, you can point it at a dependency or a project you're just rooting for, not only your own. It's open source, notarized, has no backend and no telemetry (tokens live in Keychain), and updates itself via Sparkle. Would love feedback — especially from anyone who's mid-launch right now.

Comment highlights

How does the menu bar handle multiple repos at once, and is there a limit on how many you can pin without it getting cluttered?

the live history view is genuinely useful, way more than the snapshot dashboards i usually check. running it on a repo without logging into github was a nice surprise.

Finally something that puts my repo's star count where I can actually see it. The menu bar post feature is a nice touch for hitting those milestone moments.

love that it works without a github account and still pulls the full star history, not just a current count. the live updating right from the menu bar feels like something apple themselves should have shipped.
