Today, we announce that SmythOS is now licensed under MIT. Build and deploy autonomous AI agents with our complete toolkit: Agent LLMs, MCP servers, runtime, SDK, and CLI. Together, we can keep the internet of Agents open and free for all humanity. Join us!
We’re thrilled to open up the core of SmythOS: the agent runtime, CLI, and SDK, under the MIT license. Think of it as the Linux kernel for agents: secure, stateful, modular. This is the infrastructure for the agentic web and everything you need to build and launch aligned production agents.
Why now? The next internet won’t just be humans browsing, it’ll be agents acting. Like TCP/IP and HTTP shaped the last era, new protocols (like MCP, A2A, AGP) will shape this one. We want to make sure it stays free and open.
What's new:
🌐 SmythOS Runtime, CLI, and SDK — MIT license onGitHub
🧰 Visual builder open source later this year
🧠 MCP protocol — full server & client implementation now available
🕸️ Agents with full browser control via headless Chromium
🗣️ Publish agents as AI LLMs — wrap logic, memory, tools into a callable model endpoint
📊 New debug tooling, analytics, and UX improvements for better developer experience
🧵 Weaver 2.0 — our upgraded system for vibe coding agents with intuitive, modular flows
What stays the same:
Our hosted Agent Studio continues to offer enterprise features, collaboration tools, and expert support.
💡 Share your thoughts below — we're live and responding all day!
🎁 Bonus: The first 100 GitHub stars who join our Discord get the "SmythOS Pioneer" role + access to exclusive feedback sessions with our engineers. DM Franklin on Discord to claim!
Who we are: A bootstrapped team of 40 builders who left a successful exit to shape the next era of AI. We’ve been building SmythOS full-time since Spring 2023 — for developers, by developers.
This could be the next big thing! It is great how AI agent can now build AI agents
congrats on the launch guys!! looks super cool, awesome decision to open source!
Huge congrats to Alexander and the SmythOS team on the open source launch! 🚀
Opening up the core under MIT is a big step for the agentic web: this really lowers the barrier for anyone who wants to experiment or build with autonomous AI. I can already imagine teams using SmythOS to spin up personal research agents, automate internal workflows, or even power customer-facing bots that truly "act" on users' behalf. The browser automation + modular flows combo opens up a ton of possibilities, from automated QA to next-gen data pipelines, and even creative tools that connect across different services.
Really appreciate your focus on keeping things open and developer-friendly. And thanks for featuring Logto in your stack. Honored to be part of the journey! Can't wait to see what the community builds with SmythOS. Starred, joined, and cheering you on!
Thanks everyone for the energy. I’m excited to see how you take this and run.
P.S. We’re iterating and testing hard, so please share any pain points, big wins, or other feedback—it’s what keeps us pushing the limits. We’ve also got a lot of exciting updates in the pipeline, so stay tuned!
feels like if there were ever the right time to get into building software if one already hasnt, then now is the time and starting from somewhere like SmythOS open source seems amazing
We built SmythOS to take the friction out of building with LLMs and agents, whether you're prototyping a side project or deploying something production-grade.
Here's what it brings to the developer community:
🧠 Agent Architecture
Create agents programmatically or via .smyth config files
Define behavior, models, tools, and skills cleanly
Chain logic using custom skills or call agents from agents
Candidate-based ACL (Access Control Lists) from the ground up
Scoped storage ensures data isolation between agents by default
Easily enable data sharing via shared scopes (e.g., Scope.TEAM)
Ready to integrate with third-party auth/account systems
💬 Prompting and Streaming made easy
Send prompts and get complete response or and stream the responses
Full event support (data, end, error, etc.)
Attach files directly to prompts (like PDFs or images)
Easy chat implementation with built-in persistence
📚 Vector Database Integration
Built-in support for Pinecone, Milvus, RAMVec and more coming (swap with 1 line)
One-liner PDF/DOCx/Text/MD... parsing and indexing
Search with topK results and semantic embeddings
🗃️ Unified Swappable Storage Interface
Local and S3-compatible storage out of the box
Write, read, and delete files with simple APIs
Scope isolation for data privacy (agent-specific or shared)
🧰 Fluent, Strongly-Typed SDK
Introspectable methods with autocomplete
Minimal boilerplate, maximum clarity
Consistent patterns across features (e.g., .storage, .vectorDB, .prompt())
We designed it to be modular, extensible, and fun to use, so devs can spend time building cool things, not stitching together infrastructure.
💡 It's open source and ready for your experiments.
We’re excited to see what you build, whether it’s an AI-powered chatbot, assistant, RAG app, or something totally unexpected.
Big thanks to the SmythOS team — you've been grinding on this for a long time, and today’s a milestone.
To the developers, builders, and dreamers: this is for you. You can now build agents with true autonomy and control using our open-source stack — and easily deploy them anywhere.
The world is yours. Can’t wait to see what you build.
Tried SmythOS super clean experience. And just one thing: setting up MCP with browser agents was a bit tricky at first. A plug-and-play template would make onboarding even easier.
Looking forward to the visual builder any chance it’s coming sooner? 🙌
Orchestrate AI, or it may orchestrate you! Win the fight by using SmythOS.
SmythOS is the open-source backbone for building AI agents—no manual coding needed. Just describe your goal, and Agent Weaver builds it using top AI models and APIs!
Really excited to see SmythOS open to the community! I’ve been looking for something that makes building AI agents simple and fun—this looks like it’s exactly that. Time to start experimenting! 🔥🔥
This is what MANY developers have been waiting for🔥
And thanks to their patience, we have launched a solid platform that covers all the bases 💪
A HUGE thank you to all the SmythOS Engineers and Product Team, for working their butts off to make this a reality 🙏
I for one, am super excited at the ability to fast install, and get up and running in a heartbeat ❤️
LET'S GOOOOOOOOO 🚀
Open-source runtime and SDK? That's huge! Going to try the CLI, brb 😀
BTW, the PH launch trailer is 🔥😍 how did you make it?
