Instead of starting from an empty repository, you start with a small, production-ready codebase that already handles the fundamentals — authentication, database, migrations, jobs, PWA, AI, and more. Scalar has its focus on simplicity as a foundation for complexity. The stack stays understandable, so your application can grow without software entropy making it harder to maintain.
I built Scalar because I kept running into the same problem: starting a new application is easy, but keeping it coherent as it grows is not.
AI makes this even more obvious. You can generate a lot of software very quickly, but that doesn't necessarily make the resulting system easier to understand or maintain.
Scalar takes the opposite approach: start with a small, complete foundation and keep the underlying software simple as the application becomes more complex.
It's intentionally boring technology — Python, SQLite, server-rendered HTML, minimal JavaScript — with the pieces you actually need to build a real application.
