Hey hunters 👋 maker here. safeforme started from a small, annoying problem: standing in a shop — or scrolling an e-shop — trying to decode an ingredient list like a secret message, and giving up by the third product. The existing tools leaned on barcode databases that are often a year out of date and miss that the same product gets quietly reformulated between batches. So the first principle was simple: read the label that's actually in your hand today — not a database guess. It launched as an allergen checker: build your profile once, scan a label, see which detected ingredients match you. But the more people used it, the clearer it got that "allergens" was too narrow — people also wanted to avoid animal-derived ingredients (vegan), silicones, palm oil, microplastics, sweeteners. So it evolved into what it is now: a personal ingredient filter. You tell it what you'd rather avoid, and every scan checks the label against your own list. It also grew from a camera into a whole loop: scan the label in your hand, browse any e-shop inside the app (a live badge checks products before they reach your cart), and save products so we can flag it if the recipe quietly changes. Today's launch is the milestone that ties it together — iOS, Android and a Chrome extension, all sharing one account. Whatever you add on your phone is already there in your browser. One line I refused to cross the whole way: safeforme never tells you a product is "safe" or "unsafe", and never rates or moralizes it. It just honestly shows whether something you avoid is in the ingredients — the call is always yours. Matching is deliberately conservative, and I'm upfront about the limits (OCR on blurry labels, a still-growing catalog, hidden derivatives slip through).
