This started as a joke. I said someone should build an alarm clock you have to pay to turn off. Then I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I built it.
How it works: you set an alarm and put $1–$500 on the line. When the bell rings you have five seconds to prove you're awake. You pick how, when you set it: tap a button, type a word, or do arithmetic. Beat it and the hold dissolves and your card is never touched. Sleep through it and the house keeps your stake.
There's no undo and no snooze. Before you can reach checkout you sign a waiver, and it fills itself in with your own excuses
