My brother is a first responder. For years I watched him plan his life around a photo of a whiteboard someone texted to the group chat, and a spreadsheet that was already wrong by the time it reached him.
Swapping a shift meant three phone calls and hoping an officer said yes. Nobody knew a truck was about to go out of service until it did.
So I built RescueShift for him, and it grew from there.
The hard part was never the calendar. It was the domain. Fire scheduling is not a 9 to 5 grid. It is 24/48 and 48/96 rotations, Kelly days that pull average hours back down, FLSA 7(k) overtime measured on 7 to 28 day work periods, and minimum staffing rules where losing one person closes a unit. Every generic scheduling tool I tried got this wrong.
Two things changed how I built it:
1. Coverage has to be role aware. Four people on shift means nothing if none of them is an officer or a paramedic. Showing "fully staffed" when a required role is missing is worse than showing nothing at all.
2. The station TV mattered more than I expected. Crews want to walk past a board and just know. So the whiteboard view is read only, needs no login, and runs on any screen in the bay.
It is free for individual firefighters and EMTs. The person actually working the shift should not have to pay to see their own schedule.
Happy to get into the scheduling math, the FLSA side, or what departments asked for that I did not expect.
