Hey Product Hunt! I’m Víctor, founder of GuideDoc, but I’m also a podcaster and a ridiculously heavy podcast listener.
I’ve listened to podcasts every day for years, while walking, driving, cooking, working, basically whenever I can.
Like many people, I used Overcast for a long time. But lately it had become increasingly frustrating for me: bugs, strange queue behaviour, sync issues, and an experience that simply did not feel as reliable as it used to. Maybe some of you have felt the same.
I tried moving to other apps, but I always missed something. So I eventually did the slightly unreasonable thing: I decided to build the podcast app I wanted to use myself.
That became PulsarCast.
I wanted a player with a proper Up Next queue, useful lists, Smart Speed, clearer voices, sensible downloads and apps for all the places where I listen: iPhone, Android, Mac, Apple Watch, CarPlay, Android Auto and the web.
I also wanted it to be private. The core player is free, requires no account, contains no ads and has no third party trackers. The AI features are optional rather than something forced into the listening experience.
Overcast has contributed a lot to podcast listening and has clearly influenced some of my thinking. PulsarCast is not about pretending otherwise. It is simply my attempt to take the experience in a different direction.
It started as an app built for myself, but more and more listeners are now using it and helping shape what comes next.
I’d love your honest feedback, especially if you’re also a heavy podcast listener or a long time Overcast user. What would PulsarCast need to become your everyday podcast app?
Thanks for checking it out!
Víctor
The no-account, no-tracker approach is genuinely refreshing, and the per-podcast download rules actually feel useful instead of gimmicky.
One thing I'd love is a sleep timer that can be tied to a specific chapter or remaining time in an episode, rather than just a generic 15 or 30 minute cutoff. That way I can fall asleep mid podcast without losing my place for the next night.
Finally a podcast player that doesn't shove ads down my throat or demand an account before I hit play. The Up Next queue plus per show download rules already covers my main headaches, and the transcripts are a nice bonus.
finally a podcast player that doesn't shove an account screen in my face on first launch, the no-trackers no-ads free core with optional ultra tier is such a refreshing move.
Love that it's account-free and respects privacy, that's a huge plus for a daily listener like me. One thing I'd love to see is cross-device sync of playback position and Up Next queue through end-to-end encrypted backup, maybe via iCloud Drive or a personal WebDAV folder. That way the "no account" promise stays intact while my listening follows me between my phone, watch, and Mac without trusting a server.
Been using PulsarCast for a few weeks and really like the clean interface. One thing that would make it even better: a simple "mark all as played" button for a list or feed. Sometimes I want to clear out old episodes quickly without swiping each one individually.
Finally a podcast app that works everywhere I do, and the CarPlay integration felt surprisingly snappy compared to my usual one. The Smart Speed actually saves real time on long episodes without making voices sound weird.
