Hi everyone! 👋
I built Prelook because I got tired of my own tab chaos while reading.
I'm the kind of person who opens 15 tabs in 20 minutes going down a rabbit hole — every link that looked interesting became a new tab, and by the end I'd lost track of which one I actually wanted to read. I tried a few hover-preview extensions already out there, but they kept disappointing me:
- Some only worked on sites that allow iframe embedding, so half the web (X, GitHub, Medium) showed a broken box.
- Others loaded a laggy screenshot instead of the real, interactive page.
- The polished ones locked multi-window and customization behind a paid tier.
So I built the previewer I actually wanted:
- **Hover any link** (or Alt+hover, long-press, or drag — pick your trigger) to pop a floating window right at your cursor.
- **Smart rendering**: it tries an interactive iframe first; if a site blocks embedding, it automatically falls back to a clean reader-mode view. No more dead boxes.
- **Up to 6 preview windows at once** — pin the ones you care about and compare links side by side.
- **Built-in link prefetch** so previews load near-instantly.
- **Select any text** to web-search, ask an AI, or translate — without leaving the page.
- Runs on **Chrome, Edge, and Firefox**.
And because I hate paywalls on tiny tools like this, **everything is free** — no Pro tier, no feature gates.
The process itself went through a funny detour: I originally named it TabPeek, but right before launch I found an existing extension on the Chrome Web Store already using that name — so I renamed everything to Prelook. That was a good reminder to actually check the store before committing to a name 😅
