I built PopupX because I kept running into the same YouTube problem: I wanted to preview or watch a video without losing the page I was browsing.
PopupX lets you open YouTube videos in place, using an overlay, sidebar, miniplayer, separate window, or browser-supported Picture-in-Picture. It also includes Floating Search, keyboard shortcuts, presets, and controls for hiding distractions like comments, recommendations, Shorts, chat, end screens, and more.
The goal is simple: make YouTube easier to browse, research, and watch without constant context switching.
I would love feedback from power users, researchers, students, creators, and anyone who spends too much time hopping around YouTube.
What should I improve next?
Double clicking to pop out a video is such a natural move, kind of surprised YouTube never built it in. The focus controls actually work too, hiding Shorts was a nice touch.
Double clicking videos to pop them out feels so natural now, can't believe YouTube never built this. The hide comments and shorts toggle is a nice touch too.
The double-click trigger feels so intuitive, exactly the kind of small interaction detail that makes the whole extension feel polished rather than tacked on.

How does PopupX handle videos that have embedding restrictions disabled by the uploader? Does it just not work on those, or is there a fallback of some kind?
The double-click to popup is a really clever shortcut, way more intuitive than hunting for a button. Love that you also tucked away the usual clutter like comments and Shorts so the focus mode actually feels focused.
Does the popup player actually sync with your watch progress when you go back to the regular YouTube tab, or do you have to manually find where you left off?
How does it handle videos that are age-restricted or require sign-in, do those just open in a regular tab instead?
