Hi Product Hunters. I'm Gunnar, the founder of Pontata.
I built Pontata because choosing a paint color online is surprisingly difficult. Most paint-color pages show a small digital swatch, an idealized manufacturer image, or, increasingly, an AI-generated room. None of these tells you very much about how that color behaves in an actual home.
A paint color can appear completely different depending on daylight, room orientation, artificial lighting, furnishings, photography, and the colors surrounding it.
Pontata started as a way to organize named paint colors, but the project evolved as I realized that the most useful evidence was not another color value or computer-generated visualization. It was photographs of real rooms painted by real people.
Pontata now lets you:
• Search for exact paint brands and named colors
• Explore documented real-room examples
• Compare related colors side by side
• See the same color under different conditions
• Each example is connected to an identified paint brand and color, making it easier to understand how lighting, furnishings, and room type change a color’s appearance.
Pontata does not claim that a screen can reproduce paint perfectly. Instead, it helps show the range of ways a color may appear in real environments before you order samples and test it yourself.
The site is live and still developing. I would especially appreciate feedback on which comparison tools, filters, and room details would make it more useful when choosing paint.
