I built Pict-o-view out of a simple frustration: I just wanted to flip through folders of photos on my Mac — fast — without importing everything into a library app or giving a tool access to my whole disk.
So it does exactly that. Add a folder, see your photos instantly. No accounts, no cloud, no analytics — it can't even see folders you haven't added (App Sandbox enforces it).
Under the hood: native SwiftUI + AppKit, instant photo paging with prefetch caching, non-destructive rotate/crop, slideshows, video playback with picture-in-picture — all fully offline.
Fun facts from the journey: built in two weeks with Claude as my AI pair programmer, rejected by App Store review three times (turns out you can't put "Mac" in an app name — RIP "GalleryMac"), and the hardest bug was a window that shivered because of a single AppKit toolbar constraint.

Love how it just points at a folder and goes. One thing that would make it a daily driver for me: keyboard shortcuts for quickly starring or flagging photos so I can triage a shoot without reaching for the mouse.
the "only sees folders you explicitly add" approach is honestly so refreshing compared to apps that try to swallow your whole drive. love that the privacy stance isn't just marketing fluff but actually baked into how it works.
Folder watching would be a great addition here, the app could auto-refresh when you drop new photos into a folder without needing to re-add it manually. Would save a lot of clicks for anyone using it for active shoots.
Finally a photo browser that just shows me my folder without making me import anything. The instant paging is honestly kind of addictive, especially flicking through RAW files.
the zero-setup, folder-only approach is such a breath of fresh air compared to the bloated catalog monsters out there. love that it just gets out of the way and lets you browse your actual files at full speed.
Finally something that treats my photo folders like folders instead of locking them in a library. The instant paging feels snappy, and the non-destructive crop saved me from making duplicates.
honestly this looks really nice for keeping things local, but one thing that would make it a daily driver for me is a quick star or color label system so i can flag keepers while paging through a folder, and then filter by those flags later
