Hey Product Hunt 👋
I built beardstyle.org to answer one question for myself: would a beard
actually suit me? Growing one to find out costs a month. Then people kept
asking for the same thing for haircuts, which costs the same month and is
harder to undo.
So this is that. Upload one photo, pick from 28 cuts, see it on your own head.
Two things took most of the work.
Making it still look like you. Most try-ons quietly rewrite your face, so you
end up with a nice haircut on someone who isn't quite you. That is useless for
actually deciding anything. Every generation here holds eight things fixed:
identity, facial features, expression, pose, skin tone, facial hair, clothing
and background. Only the hair is allowed to move.
Getting the model to tell cuts apart. A burst fade and a taper fade are nearly
identical from the front and completely different from behind. Describing them
in flowing English did not work, because negative constraints get diluted in
prose: ask for a style "with no X" and you reliably get X. I measured that,
then stopped writing prompts as prose. Most of the remaining work was
describing each cut against my own reference photography instead of its
textbook definition, which is why a couple of my names differ from the classic
ones. The picker is what you choose from, so the picker wins.
Two honest limits. The result is a front view, because a front photo is what
you gave me. I can't show you the back of your own head. And the free trial is
one generation, on me, because each render costs real money.
One thing I'm curious about. The last time you picked a haircut badly, what
actually went wrong: the cut itself, or explaining it to the barber?
