Pépite
General knowledge, country by country. Actually fun.
Pépite teaches general knowledge country by country. Each country is a notebook of six chapters: history, legends, language, food, land and life today. France and Portugal are open; the rest follow, about one a week (our estimate). A lesson is a short run of animated cards, and a few questions come back the next day, then at growing intervals, so it sticks. Every lesson lists its sources, each one clickable. Written in French, with an English edition. Works offline.
Hi Product Hunt,
I built Pépite because I kept closing apps that told me things I had no way to check.
It works like this: one subject a day, told in animated cards you tap, flip and swipe. The next day a few questions come back, then again three days later, then seven, twenty-one, sixty. That spacing is the whole product: reading something once and feeling clever about it is not learning, and I wanted what I read on Tuesday to still be there in November.
Pépite is organised country by country. Each country gets the same six chapters: its history, its legends, its language, its table, its land and its life today. France and Portugal are open; the rest follow, about one a week at the pace we have kept so far.
The part I care most about is at the bottom of every lesson: the list of what was read to write it. Caesar's own account, Grégoire de Tours, the record of Jeanne d'Arc's trial, a merchant's letter from Lisbon in 1755. You can click them. When a date is disputed, the lesson says so instead of picking the tidy answer: nobody knows for sure what year Clovis was baptised.
One rule I hold to: people keep their own names. Jeanne d'Arc stays Jeanne d'Arc, even in English.
It is a web app you can install from the browser; iOS and Android are not out yet. The English edition is at pepite.today/en.
I would rather hear what is wrong with it than be told it looks nice.
