Pencyl
A blazingly fast 9MB code editor built with Rust & Tauri
The lightweight, local-firsPencyl is a lightweight, zero-bloat desktop code editor designed as a fast alternative to resource-heavy IDEs. Built with Rust, Tauri, and React, it packs an integrated terminal, native visual Git graph, and customizable themes into a tiny 9.6MB installer.t development workspace.
Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I built Pencyl out of frustration with modern desktop editors that consume gigabytes of RAM just to open a few text files. I wanted a daily-driver editor that launches instantly, maintains a minimal memory footprint, and provides essential developer tools right out of the box without the bloat.
By pairing Rust on the backend with Tauri instead of bundling a full Chromium browser (like standard Electron apps), the entire installer comes out to just 9.64 MB.
What’s packed inside:
Ultra-Lightweight Footprint: ~9.6MB binary size with minimal idle RAM usage.
Integrated Terminal: Full native terminal support powered by xterm.js.
Visual Git Graph: Built-in source control tab with commit history visualization.
Custom Themes: Dark, Light, Ocean, and Dracula options with customizable hotkeys.
Clean Interface: Fast file tree navigation and tabbed editing workspace.
