I ran a retail business for 15 years. One problem never really went away: figuring out fair pay for different roles.
My sales staff earned a daily rate plus a percentage of store revenue. My store manager had a fixed salary plus a share of total sales. Freelancers got paid per task. And my social media manager started on a flat rate until I built a KPI system with 13 metrics and three performance tiers.
That system made compensation much clearer for both sides: what mattered, how performance was measured, and how pay could grow.
