Congrats on the launch! This disposable camera concept sounds like a blast. How do you see it being used for various types of group events and celebrations?
Heya!
This is Ryan Dorshorst, co-founder of Hipstamatic and of course Party! as well. What's interesting is we've tried to solve a product for this a few times in the past, but the technology just wasn't there for it. There was too much friction with invite systems, account creation, cloud storage, and keeping the app accessible and visible during an active event.
In 2024 I think the world is ready to Party!, and the technology stack in iOS has matured in some key ways to support it. First and foremost is Live Activities, which seems like a feature made for concepts like this. You get updates as each photo is shot, and the app is always visible and just one touch away no matter where you are on your iPhone (even from the Lock Screen or when glancing at your Apple Watch).
Then there is the cloud storage / back-end component. Party! is entirely built on CloudKit, which means there is no need for account setup when joining a new Party! camera. You just enter your name, snap a selfie, and you're in. This also means scalability isn't a foremost concern as we launch, and we don't have additional back-end systems to build and maintain. There are of course trade-offs with this approach, but for a small bootstrapped team the benefits far outweigh them.
Finally there is inviting and onboarding your friends to a Party! camera you have set up. We have leveraged App Clips for the initial experience here. This provides a nice UI (with a fun 3D camera animation) that guides friends into getting the full app to join. Scanning a QR code instantly brings up the App Clip card with a brief explainer of what a Party! camera is, and then after installing from the App Store you are dropped right into the camera to start shooting.
Of course the best way to see any of this is to experience it. We have a Product Hunt promotion running which utilizes an App Clip for onboarding. You can try it out by scanning the QR code on this page with your iPhone.
Additionally we have a preset Thanksgiving Camera (complete with custom label and schedule for the day).
