When we launched Paperman for desktop, the community’s number one request was: "Please bring this to iPad."
It made complete sense. Desktop monitors are stationary, but the iPad is held close, personal, and where people write, read, and sketch. However, we immediately hit a wall: iOS sandboxing makes system-wide screen overlays impossible. We couldn’t just port our desktop app over.
Instead of abandoning the idea, we turned that constraint into an opportunity and built Paperman Slate. Not as a passive filter, but as a dedicated native workspace to read books, annotate PDFs, and take notes.
A few notes on what it is:
- Our Paperman textures on iPad: Brings the same paper textures from our desktop app directly into a tablet reading and writing canvas.
- A zero-commitment alternative: Buying a separate e-ink device isn't always practical, and physical matte protectors permanently blur your screen just for writing. Slate brings the visual feel of paper into your reading and note-taking without modifying your hardware.
- Made for Apple Pencil & touch: Smooth note-taking and markup tuned for iPad.
