Opencodex brings a Codex-style agent loop to the editor you already use. Open a folder, choose a free model, and describe the outcome you want. The agent can inspect the repository, plan the work, edit files, run commands, and show every step as it happens. It supports MCP servers, skills, and subagents to make sure your experience is the same as the paid versions.

Hey Product Hunt 👋

I’m launching Opencodex, an open-source coding agent that works directly inside VS Code.

You can install it and start coding without ANY account or API keys. The default provider includes free models, while others such as OpenRouter, Groq, Gemini, Mistral, and local Ollama models are also supported.

To keep the exclusively free promise, the models from these providers that work with Opencodex are JUST the free ones. As someone who isn't willing to spend money on AI coding anymore, I know how annoying it is to scroll through model lists just to find out its not free. Opencodex lets you skip straight to the ones you really want.

Opencodex can:
Read, search, and edit your workspace
Run commands and maintain terminal sessions
Create and follow pinned plans
Delegate tasks to subagents
Connect to MCP servers
Remember project-specific decisions
Show its tool calls, reasoning, retries, and changes as it works

It shares features with almost every other AI agent, except it's free. This means you can safely cancel your AI subscriptions and still work the same as you used to.

You decide how much control it gets. Ask mode previews file changes in a VS Code diff, Auto Edits handles routine changes while confirming risky commands, and Open Access supports unattended work.

It’s still early, and I’d really value feedback on the agent experience, approval flow, and which providers or tools should be added next.

Who hunted Opencodex?

Opencodex was hunted by Evaan Chowdhry. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
