OpenClean
Free, open-source Mac cleaner you can read and undo
Cleans caches, logs, dev and AI-model leftovers on macOS. Every rule is readable YAML; anything not regenerable goes to a quarantine you can restore. Uninstaller with leftovers, Space Lens, menu bar monitor, CLI. No telemetry. Signed and notarized.
Hi Product Hunt! I'm Animesh, and I built OpenClean.
Paid Mac cleaners are closed, mostly subscription-based, and you can't see what they actually delete. I wanted one I could read and trust.
What's different:
- Every cleaning rule is a readable YAML file, and the app shows why each item is safe to remove
- Anything that isn't trivially regenerable goes to a quarantine first, with History and Restore for 1-90 days
- The Uninstaller moves an app and its leftovers together, so an uninstall can be undone too
- No accounts, no analytics; the only network call is a daily update check you can turn off
- A CLI with JSON output, plus cleanup for Xcode, npm, Cargo, Gradle, Ollama and Hugging Face caches
It's free, GPL-3.0, native Swift, and signed and notarized.
I'd love your feedback: what did it find on your Mac, what felt unclear, and which rules should I add? Issues and rule-pack PRs are very welcome.
