Built this because every other emulator wants something from you before it'll run anything - an install, an account, a config file. Opal Emu just wants the game. Drop a file, it starts. No setup, no uploads, everything stays on your device. Would love to hear what you think!

Hey Product Hunt 👋

Solo dev here. Opal Emu started as "I just want to drop a ROM and play, why does every emulator make me install something or make an account first." So that's what it does — drag a file onto the site, it figures out the console itself, and you're playing in a couple seconds. Everything stays on your device.

18 systems supported (NES, SNES, GB/GBC/GBA, N64, DS, PS1, PSP, Genesis, Saturn, Sega CD, 32X, Game Gear, Master System, Atari 2600/7800/Jaguar, Virtual Boy), auto save-states, rewind/fast-forward, a few display filters including a real CRT shader, and it's installable as an offline PWA.

If you'd rather self-host, there's a Docker image now — point it at your own ROM library and browse from the UI.

There's also a separate project I built on top, Opal Emu MCP, which lets AI agents like Claude actually see the screen and press buttons — built it mostly as an agent-testing sandbox, but happy to talk about it if that's your thing.

Would love your feedback — what's missing, what's rough, what console you tried first. I'll be here all day.

Who hunted Opal Emu?

Opal Emu was hunted by Val March. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
