Stop paying to record your screen. Onyx is a privacy-first, studio-quality recorder that runs entirely in your browser. No servers, no uploads, and no "5-minute limits." Why I built it: Most tools force cloud subscriptions or downgrade quality. Onyx respects your privacy, giving you raw, high-bitrate 4K video instantly. Free forever. Built for creators to share work without friction.
Hey Product Hunt! 👋
I’m Suleyman, the maker of Onyx.
I needed to show my editor how to edit a specific video, which meant recording a 30-minute+ walkthrough with my face, audio, and screen. When I searched Google, everything required a new account, monthly subscriptions, and annoying time limits.
I realized I only really need a screen recorder a few times a month, and I didn't want to be locked into a subscription just for that.
So I spent November 19-20th making Onyx, a forever-free screen recorder.
Onyx is my answer to subscription fatigue:
- No Account: Record right away.
- Privacy: It uses your computer's storage, not a cloud server's.
- No Limits: Record for 5 minutes or 5 hours.
- No Watermarks: Just clean 4K video.
- Quick Edits: Trim the video to cut out the "millennial pause" at the start.
I’d love to hear what you think! If you find any bugs or have a feature request, let me know in the comments. I'm shipping updates all day. 🚀
Happy recording! Suleyman
What is an advantege over the built-in macos feature with a single shortcut and 2 sec to start recording?
Can I move the position of the recorder or maybe do a resize?
This is really great, by the way. Bookmarking for future use.
Hey Saleyman. When I started recording, my computer froze for a moment. It probably uses quite a lot of memory in the browser on a regular computer.

Who hunted Onyx?
Onyx was hunted by Suleyman Dolaev. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
