As online education and remote tutoring skyrocketed, I noticed a common frustration among teachers, math tutors, and content creators. Traditional digital whiteboards felt too clinical-they lacked the organic, tactile feel of a physical classroom. Styli felt disconnected, and the tools often came burdened with heavy lag, mandatory sign-ups, and hidden paywalls.
I wanted to bring back the focus, charm, and sheer responsiveness of an authentic physical classroom directly to the browser.
🛑 The problem we are solving
Most collaborative canvases try to do too much, resulting in resource-heavy tabs and complex interfaces. LearningBoard focuses strictly on a flawless, hyper-realistic writing surface.
- The Tactile Deficit: Styli feel flat online. LearningBoard addresses this with dynamic, hardware-level pressure sensitivity that changes chalk thickness on the fly.
- The Noise Factor: To recreate the classroom immersion, we built a custom Web Audio engine that gives you realistic chalk scratching sound effects responsive to your hand speed.
- Privacy & Access: Educators shouldn't have to worry about student data tracking. LearningBoard is 100% client-side, runs completely offline, and requires zero user registration or servers.
🔄 How the process evolved
Initially, this started as a basic canvas experiment. However, early feedback from remote math tutors made us completely rethink the architecture. We stripped out database dependencies entirely to ensure a zero-lag experience even on older devices, putting user privacy first by making the app load entirely local.
