I built Novelens.ai because I kept doing the same thing with long books: buy them, start them, get 80 pages in, lose the thread of who's who, and quietly let them fall off my nightstand. It wasn't that the books were bad — it's that going from zero to "fully in" on a 500-page classic takes a kind of momentum that's easy to lose in a busy week.
I didn't want another tool that just spits out a summary and calls it done — that felt like giving up on the book, not finishing it. So Novelens.ai starts you on a faithful, warm abridgment that keeps the real voice and plot, gives you a living map of who's who so you're never lost when a name comes back 300 pages later, and lets you ask a reading companion questions mid-chapter without ever losing your page.
The approach changed a lot as I built it. I originally thought a shorter cut alone would be enough, but early readers kept getting hung up on characters — "wait, who is this again?" — so the character map became just as central as the abridgment. And the reading companion came out of watching people want to ask a quick question without breaking their reading flow, the way you'd nudge a friend reading next to you.
