Notipa is a free, open-source school-to-parent communication platform. Run your own instance with Docker — announcements, homework, fee notices, and permission slips, with no per-pupil licence fee.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
I built Notipa because school-to-parent communication is still stuck on group chats, paper notices, and apps parents have to download and remember to check.
Notipa is an open-source (MIT licensed), multi-tenant Django app: each school runs as its own isolated tenant, staff roles are scoped per school, and guardians are designed to be reachable without needing an app-store account — phone-number-first, with SMS/link invites on the roadmap. Admins and teachers manage classes and students, link the right guardians to the right kids, and post announcements school-wide or per class with a draft/publish workflow. Guardians only ever see their own children.
It started as a straightforward CRUD app, but the design kept coming back to one constraint: guardians shouldn't need technical friction to stay in the loop. That's shaped a lot of the roadmap — homework, fee notices, permission slips, and push notifications are next, all built around that same principle.
It's free for every school, no matter the type. Repo's open — feedback, issues, and PRs all welcome. Would love to hear what's broken or missing for you.
honestly this looks really useful for smaller schools that get squeezed by those per-pupil fees. one thing though, would be great if you could add a simple read-receipt system so teachers know which parents actually saw the announcement. right now i'm guessing it's kind of a guessing game on whether the message landed.
