I built NotepadX after losing an unsaved scratch file one too many times. Like a lot of you, I live in a plain-text editor all day — quick notes, log files, code snippets, half-written ideas — and I kept hitting the same wall: my editor treated unsaved text as disposable, and nothing good existed on every platform I use.
So I built the editor I wanted:
✍️ Never loses your work — quit with 10 unsaved tabs, they're all back on relaunch. Every version of every file (even ones you never saved) is kept in a local history timeline you can scrub through.
🔄 Cross-device sync without an account — it syncs your session (including unsaved buffers!) through any folder you already have — iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive. No server of ours, no sign-up, your data never touches us.
🤖 AI where it's actually useful — rephrase or refactor a selection, ghost-text autocomplete, summarize a doc. Bring your own key (Claude, GPT, Gemini, or fully-offline Ollama) — keys stay on your device.
⚡ The fundamentals are serious too: opens a 10MB log in under a second, big-file mode past 100MB, regex find & replace, 20+ languages, macros, text pipelines, six themes.

how does the AI rephrasing actually work in practice - is it built in or do i need to bring my own API key?
How does the AI rephrasing actually work in practice, like is it a built-in model or does it call out to an external API, and does that mean any of my text leaves my machine?
Curious how the AI rephrasing works without an account, since you mentioned it's free. Is there a usage cap or does it run locally somehow?
Finally a simple text editor that doesn't get in the way, and the unsaved file sync between my Mac and PC is genuinely useful when I bounce between devices mid-thought.
